He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding. (2:269)
We live in a time when countless ideologies follow the same course: gaining preeminence and falling into obsolescence shortly thereafter. As we navigate this constantly evolving social sphere, we remember that Islam is the greatest source of wisdom and that applying the teachings of our deen requires proper understanding.
The Islamic tradition is a testament to the contributions of women to their local communities and the ummah at large. The women behind The Qarawiyyin Project come from all around the world; through writing and discussion, we hope to enable local change and foster global connections.
The Qarawiyyin Project aims to revive the tradition of Muslim women being at the forefront of discussing the most critical issues of our time from an Islamic perspective, and empower women to be active in their communities around the world in carrying Islam as a way of life.
What is Al-Qarawiyyin?
Al Qarawiyyin was the world’s first university, founded by a Muslim woman, Fatima Al-Fihri in 859AD. The university became the world’s first degree-issuing institution, hosting classes not only on Islamic sciences but on mathematics, science, astronomy, and foreign languages. It became a reference point for people all over the world to visit and learn and set the standard for subsequent institutions of learning. Today the university is still in operation, and stands as a testament to the glory of Islam and the sincerity of a Muslim woman.
The Qarawiyyin Project is a step in the path laid out by our foremothers, from Hawaa’ and Hajar, to Maryam and Aisha, to Fatima al-Fihri and all those in between and since. We strive to embody their steadfastness and sincerity in pursuit of Allah Most High.
